GRADUATE AND PROFESSIONAL PROGRAMS ABROAD: Medicine & LawIPD offers exciting opportunities for graduate students at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and Northwestern University School of Law. The program offers international opportunities for Feinberg students during their M1 and M4 year of study in Mexico, China, South Africa and Uganda. M1 students may participate in observational rotations, public health research or a combination of both during the summer following their M1 year. Opportunities also exist for M4's to complete clinical rotations or research at our international partner institutions in Mexico City, Beijing, Cape Town and Kampala, Uganda. IPD also provides research guidance, direction and contacts abroad for Feinberg students who wish to internationalize their medical experience. Northwestern law students are welcome to participate in our legal exchange program in Mexico City during the summers following their L1 and L2 years. Capital University of Medical Sciences - Beijing, China
Northwestern University has been offering a medical exchange with Capital Medical University since the summer of 2003. IPD has sent numerous first year students and most recently, in 2009, its first group of fourth year students for away electives. Capital Medical, in addition to medical student training, has a Faculty of Public Health, several research institutes, and eleven affiliated hospitals in Beijing, including the CDC Hospital and the Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Former Northwestern students have participated in rotations in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Internal Medicine, and Radiology. Northwestern also runs a successful undergraduate summer program in public health during the summer and M1 students are welcomed to join these students in Public Health lectures and weekend excursions to historical sites. | Makerere University - Kampala, Uganda
Makerere University, Northwestern’s newest medical exchange program, began in the summer of 2008. Since its inception, several first and fourth year medical students have participated in rotations at Makerere. Located in the bustling capital of Kampala, Makerere University is one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in Africa, with nearly 33,000 students. The Makerere University Medical School campus includes the Institute of Public Health, the Infectious Diseases Institute and Mulago Hospital, the largest hospital in Uganda. Students have the opportunity to spend time at Mulago hospital, rural regions outside of Kampala, or a combination of both. Students in the past have participated in rotations in emergency medicine and the Community Based Education and Service Sites (COBES) program. The COBES rotation allows students to work alongside Ugandan medical students in rural health centers. MU Info Sheet (.pdf) |
| Universidad Panamericana - Mexico City, Mexico
Northwestern University has been formally affiliated with Universidad Panamericana (UP) since 2000. In addition to sending numerous first and fourth year students to Mexico City each year, Feinberg has also welcomed many UP students to Northwestern for away electives. UP is affiliated with a number of major hospitals in Mexico City, including the “national” hospitals (the equivalent of the NIH clinical centers in Bethesda). There are also two rural clinics in indigenous areas of Central Mexico, where UP students spend their sixth, service-oriented year of medical school. Most of the opportunities available to FSM students incorporate portions of the UP third and fourth year curriculum, with didactic sessions in a specialty area coupled with afternoon clinical experiences. The curriculum is conducted in Spanish. Northwestern has an undergraduate Public Health program in the summer at UP and M1 students are welcomed to join this group on any Public Health lectures and historical site excursions. | Over the past four years, Northwestern University has sent numerous 1st and 4th year medical students to Stellenbosch University for clinical and research electives. The Stellenbosch Faculty of Health Sciences enrolls 3,000 graduate and undergraduate students and comprises four Schools: Allied Health Sciences, Basic and Applied Health Sciences (Pathology and Biomedical Sciences), Medicine, and Public and Primary Health Sciences. Students are placed in either two locations, based on their choice elective. The first option, Tygerberg, is where the main Medical Campus and Tygerberg Hospital are located. Students live on the campus and are located about 20 minutes from downtown Cape Town. The second choice is Stellenbosch, the site of the main Stellenbosch University campus, and at a smaller, local hospital. Stellenbosch, a charming, bustling student-filled city, is located located 40 minutes from downtown Cape Town. SU Info Sheet (.pdf) |
