UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMS

IPD designs and administers international study and research opportunities for Northwestern students. The programs target underrepresented students and disciplines, such as premedical and engineering students, and others who might not engage in international study or research due to lack of either language skills or professionally-relevant programs abroad. The programs are organized around three broad interdisciplinary themes, each targeting a different group of students: Global Health, Emerging Global Structures, and Science & Engineering. IPD also helps coordinate the Medill Residency Program in South Africa.

GLOBAL HEALTH

Our public health programs abroad provide professionally-relevant experiences to students in disciplines that are often underrepresented in international programs, especially pre-med students in various majors (e.g., Psychology, Biology, Economics, Chemistry, Biomedical Engineering). Students from fields such as Communications, Journalism and Social Policy also participate. Foreign languages (Spanish, French, Chinese, Xhosa) are taught before departure and on-site, while subject courses are taught in English. These programs are designed for Northwestern students, taught by faculty at partner universities, and administered by IPD.

EMERGING GLOBAL STRUCTURES

These programs introduce students to the changing landscape of emerging international political and economic institutions.  The series focuses strategically on dynamic regions of the world, from widely varying perspectives. The main targets are students interested in international law, international business/economics, and international relations, as well as journalism and social policy.

JOURNALISM

IPD collaborates with the Medill School of Journalism to offer an international Journalism Residency program each spring in South Africa. Medill students are sent to either Johannesburg or Cape Town and are assigned to do high-level internship work with local newspapers, radio and television stations in a variety of capacities.  Student-written articles and on-air appearances are regularly featured in the media there. Students apply directly to Medill's Journalism Residency program. Admissions standards are high, requiring students take a pre-departure course during Winter Quarter that prepares them for their work abroad.  The course gives them the political, economic and cultural background necessary to arrive in South Africa and immediately work independently within their chosen media. To learn more about the program and how to apply visit the Medill Journalism Residency site or contact Mark LaMet at mtlamet@northwestern.edu.
